Formed in 1997, Rimm Industries, a Western Australian company, commenced research and concept design on a double ended peg. Following a series of concept models using an Australian design team clever peg was born in 2005. Various materials and manufacturing techniques were researched internationally with China chosen as the preferred manufacturer. International patents were applied for and packaging, transport and merchandising considerations undertaken.

In 2006 the first production run of clever peg was commissioned. Through exposure from the Australian Design Awards and the ABC's New Inventors program clever peg has generated considerable interest both within Australia and around the world. This has led to the first international order being placed by the La Boutique Des Inventions in Paris.
